Clocking in at nearly 25 minutes, Understudy’s Sun Bleached Gauze finds the project in an ambitious mood. Accompanying this unusually lengthy release is the publication of a volume of Understudy’s original visual art. The artwork is just as hungry and redemptive as the music.

As for the music: there’s the characteristic less-than-low fidelity, synths and drum machines degraded and seared into the chasms of nostalgic memory, pulverized by the abuses of time and the sun’s life-giving cancer rays, one could imagine. The lyrical preoccupation with waste, loss, and the disintegrating visual identity makes a lot of sense amidst this muffled decay.

These songs skew more frequently toward the beautiful and misty than prior releases - maudlin, the macabre, and menace all death-dance a bit closer this time around; it is certainly a strength.

Sun Bleached Gauze is minimal, refined, and another superlative work from this increasingly disciplined project. Once again, there is much mangled beauty to rescue, buried under the rubble.
